Liberty St. Clair

Cleveland, OH

2007

This project is a continuation of the efforts of a group of community organizations in Cleveland, Ohio to build supportive housing for the homeless. The new construction, four story, 72 studio unit building is located in an underserved neighborhood on a busy commercial corridor adjacent to a largely two story residential neighborhood. The building was sited to provide a strong presence on the commercial street yet set back as it moves back toward the residential area creating usable outdoor space as well as green space buffer for the neighborhood. Strong building elements were created with brick colors, offsets and stone detailing that were then capped with large metal cornices at the street corner and the building entry corner. The cornice element is repeated at a lower elevation to emphasize the entry. The building details and mass relate to an historic context while providing a forward looking aesthetic in the hopes of energizing development in the neighborhood.
