Northwestern University – Seabury Hall

Evanston, IL

2014

Seabury Hall was built as the academic wing of the former Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and housed a chapel, library, classrooms, and faculty offices. In 2008 Northwestern University acquired the property which also included a separate residential and dining wing adjacent to Seabury. WLW was hired to plan office and administrative space for the Student Affairs department on the first floor including an accessible testing center. The former double-height library is designated as a lounge and seminar space for graduate students. Modifications to the former chapel are planned in order for it to be used for performances and larger academic gatherings. Years of deferred maintenance necessitate upgrades to the building infrastructure and envelope and replacement of critical components. The goal of the project is to provide new life to the facility while maintaining the outstanding historic features of the original building.
