Casa Kirk

Chicago, IL

2005

These apartments were developed for Interfaith Housing Development Corp of Chicago and Claretian Associates. The project consists of 29 two, three and four bedroom units in 5 three story six flats. The project is located in a residential neighborhood of mixed density formerly built for the South Works Steel mill of Chicago. Using the neighborhood context as a key, the proposed buildings were designed with brick masonry and stone detailing. The project strives to develop interest in a building by building way, but through the alignment and scale of the buildings, to provide a unified whole for the block. The rear 75 ft of the site was developed as a fenced-in naturalized area which also serves as the storm water retention area. This area was planted with native plants and trees and the lower area covered with small natural gravel and boulders.
