Foster Hall, constructed in 1912, is located in a residential quad that has the intimate scale characteristic of collegiate gothic campus architecture. Originally two separate buildings, Foster was joined into a single entity by the addition of a new enclosed main stair that forms the primary means of access to the upper floors. The first floor common spaces were renovated to form a suite of lounges that accommodate everything from video games to quiet study. New mechanical and support spaces were introduced into the basement and upstairs bathrooms were completely renovated. Air conditioning was added and the mechanical, electrical, and fire safety systems were completely replaced. Outside, new raised porches at Foster as well as the neighboring buildings on the quad provide outdoor gathering spaces and accessibility at the front door of each of the buildings. New underground utilities were installed and center green was reconfigured and landscaped to form a welcoming focus to the residential halls.
